The iPhone 14 Max could join the iPhone 14 line in the fall if rumors of Apple's plans prove to be accurate. But the 6.7-inch phone could debut under a different name.
According to the Lanzuk leak (opening a new card), the larger of the two basic iPhone 14 models will be called the iPhone 14 Plus, not the iPhone 14 Max, as previously announced.

Other iPhone names remain the same according to this rumor. This includes a standard 6.1-inch phone called the iPhone 14 and the same models as the iPhone 14 Pro. These 6.1- and 6.7-inch phones will actually be known as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Apple last used Plus to describe one of its iPhone offerings five years ago with the iPhone 8 Plus. Previously, there was not a single iPhone Pro line - which did not come except for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The most obvious reason why Apple has changed the naming conventions is the difference between the two 6.7-inch iPhones, which are expected to be part of the Apple iPhone 14 series. The iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max are very similar names and Apple probably wants a cheaper model to Make a Pro Version - The Most Expensive Model in the iPhone Series | The phone also differs by returning the Plus name for a cheaper 6.7-inch model. And because it's a new addition to the iPhone lineup - the iPhone 14 Max / Plus is expected to replace the iPhone 14 mini - Apple would like to build a new device with a unique name.

While Lanzuk was considered a notorious leaker in the past and mentioned the source of the sale in his blog post, not everyone agreed that the name change was threatening. Twitter user ShrimpApplePro (opens on a new tab) says the name Plus will not return with the iPhone 14, a claim they have made (opens on a new tab) since August 2021. He says the names for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models will have the same names that Apple uses for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. It's also true that Lanzuk's tweet was the first to mention the iPhone 14 Plus as the new 6.7-inch model name. Earlier rumors appeared on the iPhone 14 Max, although that name may only differ from the mini model it replaced in the Apple line.
At the moment, everything we know about the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series comes from rumors, because Apple has no comments on future products. However, there seem to be some exciting features that can be retained for iPhone fans, especially the iPhone 14 Pro.
Currently, all indications point to a larger divide between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, which could lose the lower limit of features, such as the new A16 Bionic chip and also the updated 48MP camera. The Pro models are also likely to replace the iPhone notch for camera viewports, while the notch will remain on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
